A transmasculine experience of a career in outdoor recreation

The outdoor recreation industry is heavily influenced by a dominant, heteronormative culture—a culture that defines the experience not only for participants but also people working within (Warren 2015; Holland, Powell, Thomsen, and Monz 2018). Those interested in advancing career as professional industry, particularly related to leadership adventure guiding, are often required engage variety of unique living situations, arrangements, contexts. This may include, example, moving rural remote communities sit adjacent wildlands where many organizations operate their programs. It require extended overnight trips with shared housing rooming arrangements level intimacy they work uncommon most employment settings. Unique this field, then, how entangled personal identities settings one works colleagues serves participants, phenomenon creates distinctive challenges individuals who have non-dominant identities. case study follows transmasculine professional, Zach, traverses multiple sectors (ski patrol wilderness therapy) geographic locations North America (New Mexico Alaska).
